Figures of speech: Metonymy





Metonymy:

Is a figure of speech used in rhetoric in which a thing or concept is not called by its own name, but by the name of something intimately associated with that thing or concept.

Also we can say that metonymy is a figure of speech in which one word or phrase is sustituted for another with which it is closely associated.


Examples:

1.- Pearl Harbor was a sad event in America's History.

(Pearl Harbor refers to the battle at Pear Harbor,Dec. 7,1941)




2.- The pen is mightier than the sword.

(pen refers to writer; sword refers to fighter)







3.- There are two mouths to feet in my family.

(mouth refers to person).
